Get To Know: Estuaries Swimwear

Estuaries
Estuaries1
Inspired by coastal bodies of water and the cultural self-expression of New York City, Estuaries was created by two sisters who made the big move out East from Hawaii.  A seamless merge of fashion and sport, the collection takes traditional ideas of swimwear and produces innovative pieces that can be worn anywhere from an exotic beach in Tahiti to the rooftop of the Thompson Hotel.  We got the opportunity to catch up with Layla and Zhu Ru and find out what it takes to become a successful swimwear company in the midst of NYC.

So you and your sister hail from Hawaii.  What led to the decision to move out East?

We had such a good childhood living so close to the ocean, it was so carefree and liberating. To us, New York was a city full of curiosity outside the beautiful islands. It’s this dynamic of living in opposite lifestyles that gave us a sense of balance we were looking for.

What do you think are some important qualities a swimwear brand should have that’s based on the East Coast, especially somewhere like New York?

New York is so energetic and full of life – this inspires to create. I think having a directional concept is very important and knowing our brand direction well. This will differentiate our label from others. On the other hand, we pay a lot of attention to the fit and improving it. The collection is constantly moving forward just like the city.

How do you and Zhu Ru split roles as business partners?

It is most amazing we found each other as business partners.  Zhu Ru has a design background and I (Layla) have always been in sales and marketing.  It’s kind of like having both sides of the brain, fusing the creative side of fashion with the needs of the market – it’s what we strive for in our designs as well as in business operations.

What was the main inspiration for the current collection?

Our swimsuits have a lot of pieces in each pattern, so this allow us to play with fabric layering and color blocking. Its always fun when we pair the perfect combination!!

Any trends you’re absolutely loving for this season?

We don’t really follow trend. We create what we think will look best for each season. Right now, we’re loving texture and color blocking.

What is your go to, cant live without bikini?

The Seine bikini is our favorite.  We both love it in the eggshell/ silver grey color combination which is so classic, subtle and fits so well.

Q & A: The Bikini Fox

Already featured in media such as Foam Mag and hosting giveaways with well-known bloggers such as Goldfish Kiss and The Bikini Bird, Chelsea Bell is living proof that following your passion can produce great things.  Not too long ago, Chelsea launched her new website  The Bikini Fox, an up and coming swim e-commerce site that carries some of the most sought after designers in the swimwear industry today.  Here, you’re able to purchase popular brands such as Mara Hoffman, Tavik and Acacia but you can also get your hands on rarer finds such as Boys + Arrows and Alope.  An avid traveler, Chelsea also includes a page on her site called “Fox Capades” where you can send her stories about your travels and may even get featured on the site.  I got a chance to catch up with Chelsea and find out more about the creation of The Bikini Fox and the girl behind it.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Pacifica, California, a small little beach town on the Pacific Coast Highway.

How did the initial idea for The Bikini Fox come about?

This is going to sound cheesy but it came to me in a dream! It was one of those dreams where you’re half awake all night because you can’t stop thinking. My mind was turning, thinking of how I could turn my love of bikinis into something amazing! The store came to mind and for the rest of the night I remember thinking of different animals I could name it after – the bikini bee, the bikini bunny…the list went on and on, and eventually I came up with the Bikini Fox. I woke up the next morning, bought the domain name and never looked back.

Have you always been interested in the swimwear niche of the fashion industry?

Yes! It really is my passion. I love finding new, edgy, upcoming designers who are producing unique yet functional bikinis. It’s the most exciting thing when I come across something and think “YES! Exactly! I couldn’t have done it better myself!” I appreciate every little thing that perfect bikini has to offer; the right fabric, the right colors, interesting prints and of course a sexy and flattering cut!

What is your favorite place that you’ve traveled?

I think the most amazing place I’ve traveled was Tikehau in French Polynesia. My boyfriend and I have made a tradition of going to a different exotic location over Christmas and New Years. We traveled through French Polynesia last year and Tikehau was the showstopper. I remember when we got there I thought, “Now, this is what I have been waiting for this whole trip!” I’ve never seen or experienced any place like that, a crazy, flat, sandy ring in the middle of nowhere. It was so quiet and peaceful, there was so much beauty everywhere. We rang in the New Year there and the island is so small that we got to celebrate with everyone as well!

What does a bikini mean to you?

To me a bikini is pure happiness. You haven’t seen me at my best until I’m in my bikini! If I could wear one 24/7 I would be the happiest girl in the world, I don’t require much – just a bikini and some sunshine.

If you had to wear one suit for the rest of your life which would it be?

That’s a tough one. I am going to have to say my Coco bottoms and Quinn top by Acacia. It might as well have been painted on me this summer. Those pieces are so super soft it’s hard to take them off.  My obsession with fringe is out of control – I just can’t get enough!

Motto to live by?

It is better to travel well than to arrive. – Buddha

Tavik Spring 2012

Tavik has always been one of my favorite swim brands around and I would be lying if I said I haven’t been anticipating their Spring 2012 Lookbook for months.  Tavik has always embodied the California-cool, beach babe lifestyle but this time with Aztec influences.  While the colors palette is more muted than past collections, snake and tiger prints along with shredded detailing gave the collection an edgier effect.  Perfection, as always.
